What rudraksha is

Rudraksha are the seeds of Elaeocarpus ganitrus, a broad-leaved evergreen tree native to the Himalayan foothills and parts of South and Southeast Asia. The seeds are distinguished by natural longitudinal grooves; each groove divides the surface into a segment traditionally called a mukhi (“face”). The name derives from the Sanskrit for “the tears of Rudra (Shiva),” and the beads hold deep significance in Hindu and Buddhist practice, most familiarly as prayer malas.
