📜 History & Significance
Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s first national park, established in 1973, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. It protects one of the last remaining undisturbed lowland tropical forests in Asia — the Terai — and is home to some of the subcontinent’s most iconic and endangered wildlife.
Chitwan is one of the world’s most successful conservation stories. In the 1960s, the greater one-horned rhinoceros population had fallen to fewer than 100 animals. Today, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, over 700 rhinos roam the park. The Bengal tiger population has similarly recovered, with Chitwan now home to over 100 tigers.
The park is also the ancestral homeland of the Tharu people, one of Nepal’s indigenous communities, whose unique culture, traditional architecture, and vibrant stick dance performances offer a rich cultural dimension to the safari experience.
