📜 History & Significance
The Langtang Valley, often called the “Valley of Glaciers,” lies just 50km north of Kathmandu and offers one of Nepal’s most accessible yet deeply rewarding Himalayan experiences. The valley is home to the Tamang people, whose Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient gompas, and traditional stone villages create a living museum of Himalayan heritage.
Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m) is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage sites — a high-altitude glacial lake revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva created the lake by thrusting his trident into the mountainside to quench his thirst after consuming the cosmic poison during the churning of the ocean. Thousands of pilgrims visit during the Janai Purnima festival each August.
Kyanjin Gompa, the valley’s ancient monastery, has been a centre of Tibetan Buddhist practice for centuries and remains an active spiritual community today.
