📜 History & Significance
Nepal’s rocky gorges, granite cliffs, and limestone faces have attracted climbers for decades, drawn by the extraordinary combination of technical climbing and spectacular Himalayan scenery. While Nepal is world-famous for its high-altitude mountaineering, its lower-altitude rock climbing scene is a hidden gem — offering world-class routes in settings of extraordinary natural beauty.
Nagarjun Forest on the edge of Kathmandu is a sacred royal forest that has been protected for centuries — its ancient trees and rocky outcrops now host some of the Kathmandu Valley’s best climbing routes. Hattiban (meaning “Elephant Forest”) offers a peaceful escape from the city with well-established sport climbing routes on quality limestone.
In Pokhara, the crags above the Seti River gorge offer dramatic climbing with views of the Annapurna range — a setting that is hard to match anywhere in the world. For those new to climbing, Nepal’s warm and welcoming climbing community and AryaGhat’s certified instructors make it the perfect place to learn.
